How do I know if my breath smells bad?
There is a simple test to check if you have bad breath, if you lick the back of your hand and that smells bad then it is likely your breath smells too.
What causes bad breath?
There are lots of causes of bad breath, but the main one is bacteria and bits of food on and between our teeth and gums. This can be worse when we have tooth decay or gum disease. It is important to have regular check-ups to help prevent bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease.
What causes bad breath even after brushing?
If you have cavities or deep gum pockets your toothbrush and floss or interdental brushes may not reach the bacteria or trapped food, so the smell may still remain. Other causes can be fasting, smoking, certain foods like garlic, dry mouth (xerostomia), infections in throat nose or lungs and diabetes.
How can I get rid of bad breath?
Firstly try and clean your teeth well at home, or come in for a dental hygiene treatment where our dental hygienist will be able to see if there are any issues that need to be addressed.
this guide to brushing and flossing can help make sure you are cleaning in the right way. Remember to clean your tongue or use a tongue scraper. You can also use an antibacterial mouthwash like Corsodyl (although be careful as it can stain your teeth). Drink plenty of water as a dry mouth is often a cause for bad breath.
